When I took a trip to my local dump a few years ago, I realized that I didn't want to be part of the problem. Instead of contributing to the mountains and mountains of trash, I decided to take up recycling in a big way. I started analyzing different pieces of trash to see what I could reuse, and within a few months, I realized that I had slashed our garbage output by almost half.
